Tours / Wild Summer in the Northwest Highlands

A new exclusive summer 2025 tour which will be limited to only 2 guests per trip.

A summer trip based on the beautiful northwest coast of Scotland.  This area is renowned for its stunning wild landscape with coastal scenery and mountain backdrops aplenty.

We will of course take advantage of any landscape opportunities that present themselves in-between our wildlife outings. Principally we will concentrate on two very iconic species that inhabit this part of the UK.  They are the red deer and common (harbour) seals.

Key Species

Starting with the red deer, in summer these majestic proud looking animals are in their full red summer coats and looking pristine and the stag’s antlers will be at an advanced growing stage and in velvet, offering a unique different take to the normal type of images you would see. Another special element to this trip will be the opportunity to photograph the hinds with their young spotted coated calves. Apart from the unique portraits and an array of diverse images to be had there will be some very special behavioural moments to capture, like the intimacy between mother & calve as they bond. All these opportunities will take place from real close encounters to more distant views of the deer with spectacular west coast backdrops. Over the course of the 4 photo days, we will spend 2 half day sessions with the red deer at an exclusive private location.

In addition to our time spent with the red deer our other primary focus will be common seals (also known as harbour seals). We will visit some haul out sites that I have located which offer some great encounters. These vary from low water level viewpoints of curious seals as they check us out, to others hauled out on rocks. They are very engaging animals and very photogenic, so any time spent with them is always rewarding both experience and picture wise.

Other Opportunities

Due to the location of the seal sites, we are also in otter territory so we will of course watch out for any possible otter encounters that can occur on occasions.

We will also seek out some possible ptarmigan and raven opportunities in-between our main species excursions. This location can be easily reached but we would need a clear day for this to work properly but if at all possible weather wise, we will be giving this a go.

As well as the stunning scenery in this area there is also a good abundance of tearoom/cake shops, it would be mad not to visit these as we go about our travels.

Getting There

This trip will be limited to only 2 guests.

Our accommodation is in an extremely comfortable house with stunning views across the sea loch and towards the iconic Bealach na Ba. You will have your own private bedroom.

Due to the ever-increasing copying of trips the exact location of this tour and our accommodation will only be supplied on receipt of deposits paid.  It is easily accessible, around a 5-hour drive from Edinburgh or Glasgow.  If coming by public transport fly or get the train to Inverness, then train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, where I can pick you up.
