Tours / Wild Highland Autumn Red Deer Rut

Autumn Red Deer Rut

This autumn spectacle must rate as high as any for our wildlife yearly highlights, such is the drama and pageant of this event. Many folks already visit the superb English parks to see and photograph this spectacular wonder.  However for various reasons it’s always been a bit more challenging in the Highlands. Nevertheless I am pleased to say that I have found a fantastic location and can now offer a trip to the Scottish Highlands to photograph the red deer rut in a magnificent Highland setting.

This 5-night full board 4 full days photography trip will include 3 outings to the red deer location to photograph the rut.  A multitude of possible images will be conceivable throughout these visits: From the classic roaring shot both close-up and in landscape; stag rounding up his hind harem; Stags posturing in various poses, and various atmospheric silhouettes. Fighting stags might be possible – this is something that does not happen daily but with some luck we could be there on one such day. Of course other opportunities will present themselves over and above what I have mentioned. All the images you see in the above banner were taken over 4 days on this very trip in autumn 2024.

Other Opportunities

Other outings may include a landscape session to take in the magnificent scenery of the area and weather dependant (we need the hilltop clear) an excursion to try and find and photograph some local ptarmigan which is always a thrill. A visit to a seal haul out might also be possible if time allows.

When possible between excursions we will try and take in some of the many fantastic tearooms/cake shops that we will pass on our travels.

Getting There

This trip will be limited to only 2 guests.

Our accommodation is in an extremely comfortable house with stunning views across the sea loch and towards the iconic Bealach na Ba. You will have your own private bedroom.

Due to the ever-increasing copying of trips the exact location of this tour and our accommodation will only be supplied on receipt of deposits paid.  It is easily accessible, around a 5-hour drive from Edinburgh or Glasgow.  If coming by public transport fly or get the train to Inverness, then train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, where I can pick you up.
