Being based in Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands makes it ideal for me
to make the most of the fantastic scenery and wildlife that surrounds
me.
Over the years I have concentrated on many of the local species, building up detailed portfolios of Red squirrels, Red deer, Mountain Hare and the wonderful ancient Caledonian pine forests. I also have good coverage of many other Highland subjects.
Scotland
offers a wide range of opportunities for photography
- some of the the best sea bird colonies in Europe can be found
here, as well as some of the most picturesque scenery, particularly
on the West coast. I regularly visit these areas, photographing
the great variety of Scotland for my stock library.
Recently a trip to Finland produced a unique chance to photograph some of the larger and rarer mammals in Europe - I was fortunate to get some good shots of Brown Bear and Wolverine. Some of the results are on the home page and in the gallery. Further trips abroad are being planned!
I sell a good proportion of my work from my own stock material which I constantly increase with new images. I am also represented by several agencies - Pictor, Woodfall Wild Images and Gettyone.
My work is used for many different purposes - amongst others magazines like BBC Wildlife,The Field, Outdoor Photography, and The Scottish Field use my pictures. Some of my other clients are Scottish Natural Heritage, the RSPB and the Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board.
My first book "Red Deer" published by Colin Baxter Photography Ltd is illustrated with Red deer pictures that were taken over a period of 3 years. Postcards, calendars, advertising and books are all outlets for my work.
In the BG BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year awards I have won the Eric Hosking award twice, been a category runner-up once and had four images highly commended over the past few years.
For the future my aim is simple, to try and take good original pictures which show the subject in an intimate and personal way, so that whoever looks at that picture can feel in a small sense that they were there as well.
